Space & Opportunity - making A PLAYBOOK for Aquila...
Part 1- How it all began...
A real time story of a Creative who moved into an apartment, only to find out that the view actually overlooked a car park. As if things weren't bad enough... The car park was going to be developed into a massive multimillion pound complex. this would turn my immediate environment into a building site. This was a problem...no question. I had just moved to a new city to begin a new life as a photographer. Since I was just beginning I had to teach myself from scratch, requiring lots of study and focus. I had been shooting a picture a day for just over two years and had become quite adept at the craft.
During the first two years of my new life I had come to terms with the situation of the car park and even started to make cityscapes where I incorporated the car park as a subject.
I learned to see things differently and began to see the value in making the ruinous landscape my subject matter. Using my imagination to drive the narrative. Imagining what could be not what was.
In 2013 they were about to begin the Demolition. My neighbors and I would talk about how disruptive the next few years were going to be. The noise, dust and general construction site drama.
Some of them moved out. Some wrote letters to try to control things as much as they could to minimize the inconvenience. Me... I listened...
I had no choice but to be there, since my 5 year plan required me to be exactly where I was. While these guys were going on about this and that I thought to myself how much like a soap opera it was and how interesting it would be to shoot this somehow.
Bam.... It me like a tonne of bricks (pun intended) why don't I document the whole thing. Why don't I make a journal of the process.? I could shoot from my balcony. In fact that would be the best vantage point to shoot from.
Just like that the previous future disaster had become a potential opportunity to create a unique project that could be leveraged further down the road.
All I had to do was commit....
start to finish...
